RE: Systems Status

I should also add that the St. John Academic Center is online and fully functional. Although CHOICE cannot supply our Internet service we have been able to continue to use their infrastructure to deliver video, voice and Internet to St. John.

RE: Systems Status

Good Afternoon everyone,

Hopefully you have all seen your emails streaming in as the system come back online. All emails were “held” until they were delivered.

Our internet provider on St. Thomas – CHOICE—incurred a lightning strike last night at approximately 9:45 that disabled its connection to both ATT and Global Crossing. This is a system wide failure that effects all of their customers. When their main systems went down, they switched to a backup broadcast system on STX at Global Crossing. Their back up system on STX AND our backup system on STX both failed to take over as ours has done in the past because of a failure upstream with the international provider coming out of Florida. Our engineers were able to temporarily reconfigure our systems to bypass this problem and allow our connection in STX to serve the STT campus. We do not know how long CHOICE will be out, so if we lose connectivity STX to our internet service – which has happened several times in the past few weeks – we will be without service. Also please keep in mind that STX and STT are now sharing the Internet service. We will monitor usage and monitor how long CHOICE may need to restore service. We do have the option of increasing bandwidth into STX if we need to.

We are also finalizing remediation of the interruptions with the vc services. The services are online and running with little or no interruptions. We may experience brief periods this afternoon as testing sand remediation are finalized. I will update you all at the end of the day on the scope of that issue and the resolution.

Everyone have a pleasant day and continue to call the helpdesk with problems or issues.

Tina

Systems Status

Good Morning UVI,

Currently the St. Thomas campus is without Internet connectivity, and services are not available from off campus. We are looking for damage from the storm last night. CHOICE our Internet service provider on STT is down, so the St. John Center is off line as well.

The VC systems are working well.

We expect resolution shortly, we will keep you updated.

Tina

July 27, 2011

Greetings University Community,
A uvi.edu email account was involved in an email spam event that involved many unsolicited emails to be sent from the uvi.edu domain. This event appears to have resulted from a computer virus. While the virus has been removed, the result of the spam event is that Hotmail has temporarily blocked all e-mail coming from the uvi.edu domain. ITS network technicians are working directly with Hotmail to have them unblock our domain. This may take a few days as we work to correct/improve our e-mail standing on the Internet.

Sprint Long Distance is Not Working Territory Wide

Greetings UVI Community,

This message is to inform all users that our long distance service provider Sprint just informed UVI that they are currently experiencing technical difficulties. Sprint long distance services are currently unavailable territory wide. Therefore, users on or off campus cannot complete long distance calls at this time.
Sprint was unable to give us a timeframe of when long distance services will be restored to the territory. However, as soon as Sprint provides UVI with additional information as to the status of long distance service we will update the University Community.
In the meantime users can access toll free numbers from campus or complete long distance calls by using their cell phones.
ITS apologize for any inconveniences this may cause.

3:00 UPDATE: Technology Update Monday May 16th

The offending switch in the Evans Center has been replaced. In addition, problems with connectivity in the dorms have been resolved. All systems (except for the library and STX CETL) are now fully restored.

Please call the help desk if you have any issues or problems to report.
Thank you for your patience, it helped us a great deal!

NOON UPDATE: Technology Update Monday May 16th

Greetings All,

We need to replace the switch in the Evans Center to restore services to offices and classrooms. While we are moving spares from STT to STX, we are temporarily “barrowing” a switch from the Library. This is the quickest way to restore the areas affected by the service outage.

We will bring the library and STX CETL back on line when the spare parts arrive from STT.

We will keep you posted.
Tina

Technology Update Monday May 16th

Good Morning All,

I want to share some information with you about some service disruptions this morning.

The Internet connection on St. Croix, was interrupted over the weekend because of the storm. Since Saturday, St. Croix has been getting its Internet service from St. Thomas. The problem is at the tower site at Blue Mountain on St. Croix, so this will continue until the weather clears enough for the tower climbers to fix the problem. We will keep you posted.

Our microwave is functioning properly. This is a vendor problem.

In addition, power outages on the St. Croix Campus this weekend caused several problems early this morning. Servers in the Northwest Wing went down because of the power outages. This caused connection problems in the computer labs. Those services were restores about 9:30 this morning.

There is also a network switch in the Evans Center that is not working properly so there are a few offices and vc rooms that are not able to connect at this time. This problem is currently being analyzed and we expect it to be resolved shortly.

Please continue to call the helpdesk with your issues so we can make sure all of the issues are dealt with in a timely manner.

We also have two technicians out sick this morning on St. Croix, so we are doing our best to resolve problems as quickly as possible.
Your continued patience is appreciated.

Thank you
Tina

Technology Updates: domain passwords, web top desk & automated call answering attendant feature

Office of the CIO
April 14, 2011

1. All domain passwords expire every 120 days requiring users to change their passwords on the UVI domain (on campus). New passwords will not authentic on technology resources if the password is not changed on campus. If you plan on being away from campus for an extended period of time like vacation, summer break or on sabbatical leave, it’s always a good idea to change your password before you take off!

2. ITS is pleased to announce web . Users can now log IT helpdesk request digitally on line. Users no longer have to bear in mind the opening hours of the service desk; a request can be made any moment of the day, users can now log calls at their convenience. The process is effortless, user friendly and simple.nce on line and go to mycampus.uvi.edu login using your UVI domain credentials, after logged in click on helpdesk. When opens you will be already logged in. Go to shortcuts located on the left side of your screen. Select “New 1st line incident” the window below will open. Your contact information will appear in the window. Inset your category, sub category and call type. In the request window click the (stamp) the date, time and your name will appear in the window. Record your helpdesk request number, provide as much detailed information as possible. Users are encouraged to make use of the IT knowledge base located under the shortcuts window. The knowledge base is design to assist users in solving their own technology challenge. If you have any questions about how to use web please contact us by email at helpdesk@uvi.edu . Happy logging!

3. ITS will be adding an automated call answering attendant feature to our helpdesk at ext. 1466 to serve you better. In the next couple of weeks callers will first be greeted by an attendant, which will offer choices on how the call is to be routed. The auto attendant is automated call technology that answers calls and provides the caller with options for choosing the department they wish to speak to.
The implementation of the attendant feature will assists callers in getting faster resolution of their inquiry or helpdesk request.
Added Value:
 Users get a quick answer for certain types of questions (ex. hours, directory questions)
 Calls are routed efficiently and customers are directed to the best method or staff member to assist them.
 Better customer service, because staff is focused on ensuring quality of response to submitted issues rather than transcribing phone calls.
