July 29, 2008

Greeting University,
This communication is to provide you with an update on the status of networking services on the St. Croix campus. This morning our inter-island microwave system experiences a major failure. Technicians are currently working with Harris Corporation (microwave manufacture) in order to isolate the problem and attempt to repair the connection.
Currently:
· The 4 digit dialing to St. Thomas or ST. Croix campus is not working but users can access either campus by dialing 693 or 692 and the 4 digit extension of the person you are trying to call.
· To access Audix from the St. Croix campus, dial 693-1599 and login to Audix as usual.
· E-mail Services to the St. Croix campus is not working
· All internet and Intranet services on the St. Croix campus are currently off line.
· Video conferencing services between islands are currently not working
· Users on the St. Croix campus can still access Blackboard, BanWEb, and Banner services by using a working internet connection accessible outside of the ST. Croix campus network. This would allow users to connect to these services through the web interface.

Information and Technology Services will keep our users informed as we continue to work on returning our users to a state of service. Information and Technology Service apologies for any inconveniences this outage may have caused. Thank you in advance for your patience as we work through this issue.

ATT T1

As a reminder, please also note that the ATT T1 back up connection would only accommodate on campus web surfing. ATT is not announcing our routes so outside access to the uvi.edu domain and e-mail would still not be accessible.

Thanks,

Kelly

ATT back up is a manual configuration change in the Cisco Internet devise. Mark and I are aware of the config change. I will make sure the Cecil knows how to make the change in the future. Additionally, the config change is documented in the network diagrams from UDT.

Thanks,

Kelly

Latest Update Tina: ENS has isolated the internet failure to a blown UPS connected to the microwave in Pehna. A interdepartmental requisition has been approved to purchase a replacement UPS. Services will be restored within the hour.
Why isn't our AT&T Internet backup working????

Hello all,

Troubleshooting efforts have isolated the microwave problem to be between Mt. Welcome and the St. Croix campus sites. The Mt. Welcome site can communicate to both sites on St. Thomas. Derval is at the Mt. Welcome site working with Geo at the St. Croix campus site. They continue to troubleshoot with the Harris technician on the phone. I will e-mail later today as more information becomes available.

Cherie, please send out an update to the community alerting them that we have been able to isolate the problem and are now working to resolve it.

Thanks,

Kelly Harrigan
Manager, Enterprise Network Services – UVI

Hello all,

The microwave is still not operational as of this morning. Derval was not able to continue troubleshooting efforts yesterday afternoon at the Mt. Welcome site due to the inclement weather. However, he is on his way to the Mt. Welcome site now. I’ll e-mail with an update as more information becomes available.

Thanks,

Kelly Harrigan
