Office of the CIO
January 19, 2011

Greetings UVI Community!
Technology Update: Wireless Access

This communication is being sent as an update on the intermittent connection issue experienced by users across campus attempting to connect to the UVI wireless network.
ITS technical staff is reporting that the STT UVI wireless network is over saturated during peak usage times. The peak usage times have been identified as between the hours of 4:00 pm to 11:00 pm Monday thru Friday. During saturation periods users will experience intermittent service while using or attempting to access the STT wireless network.
Please be aware, that an IP address is used with each type of device that connects to the UVI wireless network (iPhones, Blackberry’s, iPads, Smartphone, laptops, etc.) The UVI wireless network has a total 722 IP address available for users across campus. A user will not be able to connect to the wireless network once the maximum number of IP addresses is reached. The IP addresses are set to disconnect devices in 30 minute increments when not in use. Users may not be able to connect to the UVI wireless network during peak usage hours.
Users are encouraged to disconnect their device from the UVI wireless network when not in use. This will enable others to connect to the UVI wireless network when needed.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding this communication please contact our helpdesk at ext. 1466 or helpdesk@uvi.edu !
