Internet Connection

Office of the CIO

August 27, 2008

Greeting University Community,

Please be aware that currently our internet connection is being utilized to its full capacity on both the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. Users may notice that websites will take longer to load and in some cases the connection may time out. Currently, ITS is working on a solution that will allow us to “turn up” and increase the University’s internet bandwidth capabilities in the near future.

We recognize the important role that the Internet plays in our daily operations at UVI, here is what you can do to help save on the use of the University’s bandwidth:
· Resist the urge to use our Internet connection to stream radio into your office
· Don’t watch streaming video on CNN or the Weather channel on line
· Avoid streaming or downloading video or software of any kind – if it is work related come in early and do it before 9am
· Avoid downloading or playing music online
· Above all -- put our students first and ask yourself before you use the Internet if it can wait or if it is more important than providing access to teaching and learning applications and to our students.

ITS will continue to monitor our Internet connections, and will provide updates on usage. Let’s see if we can get our utilization down in order to support our Vision 2012 mission; Effective use of technology.

ITS is also aware that Blackboard is running at very slow speeds when users are trying to access from St. Croix, St. Thomas off-campus and off-island locations. St. Thomas on-campus access to Blackboard is functional. ITS has made resolving this issue a priority. Please be assured that we are doing all we can to restore full access. We will continue to notify you of our progress.

If you have any questions or comments please contact our ITS service help desk at helpdesk@uvi.edu or call ext. 1466.
