Update on the Enterprise X: Faculty & Raptor Servers
November 4, 2008
This is a technology update regarding the use of the Enterprise X: drive, the Faculty and Raptor servers. Information & Technology Services is in the process of implementing a new file storage server with the intention of replacing Faculty, Raptor and the X: drive. Please note that data on the servers will be available until the new servers are implemented. Full implementation is scheduled for the Spring Semester 2009. The servers are being replaced for two main reasons: the hard drives has very limited space and the servers are currently behaving erratically on occasion. The new servers will be set up with allocated home directories for faculty and staff. This method of allocating file storage space is more in line with IT best practices across other University and Corporate settings and is much easier to manage.
In the meantime, we suggest, that you make every effort to back up all files that you have on the Faculty and Raptor servers as well as on the X: drive. I would encourage you to take advantage of Blackboard course management system for a secure storage space for course related files. There is also a place where faculty and staff can post websites separate from the new hosted uvi.edu site and that is http://sites.myuvi.net. ITS set this service up with Google as an alternative for faculty and staff to utilize for posting websites.
If you are interested in using http://sites.myuvi.net for hosting your website please contact the ITS help desk at helpdesk@uvi.edu or call 693-1466 so we can arrange to get you set up.

The current status on the St. Croix campus is: WAPA is down and the St. Croix backup generator power is also down. Therefore, all technology services are down. Thank you.
Technology Update for October 22, 2008
October 22, 2008
This is a technology update for October 22, 2008. The inter-island microwave system is currently functioning; four digit dialing and access to Audix has been restored. The ITS technicians are currently testing all services to ensure that all systems and services are running at optimal levels. Testing will conclude within the next hour; at that time Information Technology Services anticipates that all services will be fully operational. It is our intention to have all VC rooms online by 2 pm. Thank you for your support and understanding as we restore the technology to pre- Hurricane Omar status. Please contact the Helpdesk at 693-1466 or via email at helpdesk@uvi.edu if you have any questions. Thank you.

St. Croix Campus: Telephone System Shut Down Tonight
October 21, 2008
Greetings University Community,
Please be informed that the St. Croix Campus telephone system will be turned off this evening. This decision was made by the CIO, the CEA and the Office of the President because of the volatility of electrical power from WAPA and the unreliability of the redundant generator power on the St. Croix campus. Earlier today the telephone server was replaced with a new server and we did not want to take the risk of losing a second telephone server due to power problems.
Information and Technology Services apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause but we feel that this is in the best interest of the University. Telephone service will be restored in the morning. Thank you for your patience as we work through this recovery period.

ITS Update, October 21
This is an Information and Technology update for October 21, 2008. Information and Technology Services and the Avaya technicians are presently on the St. Croix campus conducting tests on the replacement telecommunications server. The telephone system is currently functional and users on both campuses can dial the seven digit extension of the person they are calling from either campus. Users on the St. Croix campus can access voice mail services by dialing 693-1599. However, if WAPA power or the generator fails the telephone system will go down.
Re-establishing the inter-island microwave link to the St. Croix campus continues to be a challenge for Information and Technology Services. We have been able to isolate the problem on the microwave to an alignment problem and/or water in the conduit between the St. Croix campus and the Mt. Welcome site. With the assistance of Harris Corporation we have located a tower crew to assist with resolving the issues with the microwave system.
Due to complications with the microwave system the Provost’s Office is currently coordinating and scheduling all Video Conference classes. Please contact the Provost’s Office on the St. Croix campus at 692-4022 and on the St. Thomas campus at 693-1200.
At the present time the St. Croix campus can access the following technology resources:
Exchange.uvi.edu
Blackboard.uvi.edu
Banweb.uvi.edu
Faculty.uvi.edu
St. Croix users please note that because of the unstable electrical and generator power these services may be intermittent.
If you have any questions please contact our ITS help desk at 693-1466 or email us at helpdesk@uvi.edu. Thank you for your patience as we work through this recovery period.

ITS Update, October 20th, 2008
Greetings,
This is an Information and Technology update for October 20, 2008. Libraries on both the St. Croix and St. Thomas campus are in full operation today and open to the general public.
Restoring telephone and microwave services to the St. Croix campus continues to be a challenge for Information and Technology Services.
Currently, the telephone system will not turn on and users on St. Croix have no access to telephone services. Avaya, the proprietary vendor for the telephone system, is scheduled to be on the St. Croix campus this afternoon. The objective is to restore telephone service to the campus. Presently, an emergency telephone line has been connected in the Security office 340.778.4701 for access in and out the campus.
ITS technicians have determined that the inter-island microwave is experiencing several points of failure. ITS technicians will continue efforts to restore the inter-island microwave link.
At the present time the St. Croix campus can access the following technology resources:
Exchange.uvi.edu
Blackboard.uvi.edu
Banweb.uvi.edu
Faculty.uvi.edu
St. Croix users please be aware that because of the unstable technology environment these services may be intermittent.
If you have any questions please contact our ITS help desk at 693-1466. Thank you for your patience as we work through this recovery period.

ITS Update 10-17-08
Greeting Colleagues,
This is an Information and Technology update for October 17, 2008. The St. Thomas library will resume normal scheduled hours starting tomorrow October 18, 2008 at 9:00 am and will close at 5:00 pm. Unfortunately, the St. Croix campus library will not re-open until Monday, October 20, 2008 because of water damage incurred due to Hurricane Omar ,along with no electricity or access to technology resources.
Efforts to restore technology services to the St. Croix campus have been hampered due to lack of electricity; once the electricity is restored Information and Technology Services will attempt to fully restore the technology access to the St. Croix campus.
If you have any questions please contact our ITS help desk at 693-1466. Thank you for your patience as we work through this recovery period.

UVI Technology Update
October 16, 2008
Greetings Colleagues,
This is a technology update for October 16, 2008. In the wake of Hurricane Omar the University of the Virgin Islands will be open for business tomorrow, October 17, 2008. All employees on the St. Thomas campus are expected to report to work for their normal work hours. Essential employess on the St. Croix campus must report to work for normal business hours. Nonessential employees on the St. Croix campus report tomorrow at noon.
The libraries on both campuses will remain closed tomorrow to the public but will resume regular business hours starting Saturday October 18, 2008.
Information and Technology Services has been working hard for most of the day to recommence technology services on both campuses. However, the St. Croix campus telecommunication and inter-island communication system (microwave) has sustained damage and is not fully operational. ITS will commence repair work tomorrow.
UVI will use the emergency hot line number to post campus updates:
St. Thomas 693-1016

St. Croix campus without power
This is a special announcement for Friday, Oct. 10, 2008. It is for the entire University Community.
Due to a WAPA power outage, the St. Croix campus is currently without electricity. Also, the campus generators have not come up to provide backup support. This means that, along with other IT services, four-digit dialing to the St. Croix campus will not work. To access St. Croix offices by phone, individuals should use complete phone numbers.
